“We didn’t spring suddenly out of the earth like a mushroom,” guitarist/vocalist Trevor Tyrrell says of the workmen-like years that he put into Weird Owl before the Brooklyn-based psych-rock band released its Tee Pee records debut, Ever the Silver Cord Be Loosed, earlier this year. “It was more of a garagey ‘let things happen with no restriction’ evolution.” Since Weird Owl formed in 2004, Tyrrell and his bandmates have slowly crafted their own take on the deep, artful psychedelic sounds often associated with its label – a mix of gritty riffs, synthesizers and heady lyrical concepts. The group describes its work as a “convergence of imagination, poetry and sound,” and, true to form, Tyrell’s lyrics tackle such weighty themes as astrology, past-life experiences and the subconscious. “We are not trying to be psychedelic in a druggy way – we are trying to capture the space between dreams and physical reality,” Tyrrell asserts. “One idea we explored on the record is the idea of the out of body experience – being an observer, seeing things from this otherworldly state.”
