Brotherly love is something of an oxymoron when it comes to bands fronted by brawling male siblings like The Kinks or Oasis. Sisterly love, however, is altogether real with Summer Twins, the dreamy Riverside, Calif.-based pop-facing group fronted by sisters Justine (drums and 1 ½ years older) and Chelsea (guitar, lead vocals) Brown. “We’ve always gotten along really well, which is kind of surprising,” Chelsea says with a laugh. “We are always together and we don’t fight very much.” That sunny atmosphere translates into beach-worthy songs carried on the breezy, shimmering tension of jangly guitars, snap beats, mild psychedelic lift, muted edginess and glorious harmonies, capturing the purity of The Beach Boys or haunting reverie of The Mamas & The Papas. Starting with ‘60s rock records from their bluegrass-playing father, Summer Twins also dip into the ‘50s for inspiration. Yet, it was The Runaways who initially motivated the sisters to play music and form Scandells, a punk cover band. But it’s that rock rebelliousness that provides enough edge to keep their music firmly grounded, as evidenced on the recently released Forget Me EP. “We have some [dreamy] elements, like the harmonies,” Chelsea explains, “but we’re more rock and roll. We can rock out too.”
