Shaky Feelin’
Feeling Groovy
SoCal quintet Shaky Feelin’ (or Shaky Healin’ on Sundays, they say) blend together reggae, rock, bluegrass and funk. “It’s always been hard for us to describe our music,” says guitarist/vocalist Mark Masson. “You can hear the influences—Phish, The Beatles, Allman Brothers. The songs we write are coming from my heroes.” But the group doesn’t care what you call them, as long as you move. “We make people dance in every way possible,” he says. “They’re struck with something when they hear our music. They get the shaky feelin’.” And the band creates that shaky feelin’ with danceable grooves,
solos and, of course, infectious energy. “The two-drummer vibe obviously makes things more awesome,” Masson says. “The drum solos get really epic.”
Along with the drums and shredding guitar solos, the guys “make fun of each other onstage, joke with the crowd and go through every style of music.” There’s also a light show that percussionist Cameron Probe runs while he’s playing. Now that the band has started generating some buzz, keyboardist Franklin Murphy has high hopes. “We’ve got to take it to the moon. We have everything it takes, it’s just about getting our voices out there,” he says. “We’re looking for new ears.” Sarah A. McCarty
