Sassy Butt Rock or Psychedelic Folk Rock?

Andrew Shepard can’t decide if “sassy butt rock” or “psychedelic folk rock” best describes Roadkill Ghost Choir. “We spend most of our time playing music onstage, so we try to make sure it’s not some boring bullshit,” he says. “If it’s not fun to us, then it’s definitely not fun for the audience.” After “constant touring,” the sextet with an “impish edge” has begun to appreciate their hometown of DeLand, Fla. – “it’s not too exciting of a place, so that has helped us focus on getting together and playing music,” he says. Since forming Roadkill Ghost Choir as a solo project in 2010, Shepard says his “creative inspiration comes in waves. It’s about taking whatever hits me right and holding onto the feeling or idea until I get into that headspace where it comes out naturally.” And that happened on the 2012 EP Quiet Light, their first real introduction to working in a studio. Bob Dylan, Wilco and Radiohead have always been influences, and as the band has evolved, Slowdive, Neu!, Boards of Canada and Kurt Vile have become inspirations for writing and approaching songs. Roadkill Ghost Choir will continue to tour heavily and plan to record their first full-length in December. “We’ve been writing and demoing whenever we have time off, so we’ve been busy,” Shepard says. “It’s a good busy.”
