On Tuesday night and Wednesday morning and afternoon, the Relix Studio hosted and live streamed Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur services from New York City. Like the celebrations at the Brooklyn Bowl 10 days prior, the services were helmed by Rabbi Daniel Brenner and heralded by Jeremiah Lockwood, who assisted in bringing music, people and spiritualism together along with Antibalas’ Jordan McLean, Yula Be’eri, John Bollinger, Stuart Bogie, Antibalas’ Timothy Allen and Yusuke Yamamoto.

The Kol Nidre services kicked off at 7:30 p.m. with a welcoming song before the Ark was opened. The musical segment got underway with an a capella version of B’yeshiva shel Malo by Lockwood. Next, Rabbi Brenner introduced Kol Nidre, which is a Hebrew and Aramaic declaration recited before the beginning of the evening service on every Yom Kippur. The Kol Nidre ensemble was rounded out by Guster drummer Bryan Rosenworcel, who helped add fluttering cymbals during the mediations throughout the evening. Highlights included the silent prayer over the Amidah, Brian Grone and Rosenworcel on Sim Shalom, marking the fourth time they’ve performed the prayer together, the Thirteen Attributes led by Be’eri, a traditional Avenu Malkeinu, a gorgeous Al Chet (Ve’al Kulam) by the full band and more. By the time the livestream was over, the lasting feeling of atonement had settled in, as did the initial pangs of hunger.

The following morning at 10 a.m., the Relix Studio once again sent out signals over the airwaves to honor the holiest day in the Jewish year, Yom Kippur. Once again, the services were hosted by Rabbi Brenner and featured musical accompaniment from Lockwood, McLean, Be’eri, Bollinger, Bogie, Allen and Yamamoto.

Highlights from the morning of the day of atonement included Torah processions, the Torah lift, also called V’zot haTorah, beautiful words from Alex Willick, B’rosh Hashanah, Kohenet Aliza Rivka, the prayer for the departed Yizkor, Psalm 23, El Maleh Rachamim, Ribbono Shel Olam and more.

After two hours of music, prayer, meditation and storytelling, and a beautiful Avinu Malkeinu by Aaron Diskin from the klezmer band Golem, Rabbi Brenner welcomed Relix Editor-in-Cheif Mike Greenhaus, who looked back on over a decade of gatherings and thanked those who helped curate and maintain a community centered around the days of awe. He thanked producer Wendi Weinman for bringing her community touch, Lockwood for his cantorial skill, Be’eri for her musical essence, Bogie and McLean for their horns, Bollinger for his percussion and continued presence and more.

Then Eric Slick tuned in to remotely perform “Who By Fire” by Leonard Choen, which was followed by outdoor musical video contributions by Josh Kaufman and Anne Nerov, Noah Lehrman, Real Estate’s Alex Bleeker, who did a spoken word version of “Who By Fire,” Steve Salett who performed Bob Dylan’s “Not Dark Yet,” and more. It’s notable that throughout the livestreams, The Disco Biscuit’s Aron Magner provided piano, which melded meditations, music and prayer.
