Watch: Devon Allman Previews ‘Miami Moon’ with New Single “You”
Today, Devon Allman continues the rollout for Miami Moon, his long-awaited fourth full-length solo album, with the second preview single “You.” On his latest project, the esteemed songwriter and roots rock torchbearer showcases a brand-new sound, trading his masterful blues and swamp-rock style for a slick and seductive exploration of funk and soul influences. Accompanying today’s release is a stylish music video, exuding the artist’s rocker charm with behind-the-scenes footage from a photo shoot.
“‘You’ was written on the spot in the studio as we made the Miami Moon record,” Allman recalls in a release. “A love letter to my wife…It simply didn’t exist prior to going in to make the record. We had so much fun turning the photo shoot into a BTS music video. Shot on location at the Angad Arts Hotel in St. Louis…a perfect, hip location for the smooth vibe of the song.”
Allman debuted his bold new turn earlier this summer with “White Horse,” a high-stepping anthem complete with such ‘70s touchpoints as whirring organ and prowling congos and cabasa. “You” is the Sunday to that Saturday night, bringing down the propulsive dancefloor-ready funk to a shadowy simmer with rich harmony and a gripping bassline. The artist realized this vision with studio sheen from a superstar team, tapping George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville, Adam Deitch, Karl Denson and Jackson Stokes–who joined Allman on his recent record-setting 50-state in 49 days run–to lend their skills and perspective to the set. The final product came together at on two-inch analog tape Miami’s Criteria Studios, where iconic albums and core inspirations Layla and Eat a Peach were tracked.
“Making the Miami Moon record with these legendary musicians has been a high point of my career,” Allman shares. “They brought these songs to life with their masterful playing and timeless feels… Letting go of some previous, limiting thought processes allowed some of my other influences to enter the chat for the first time such as Curtis Mayfield, Sade, The Cure, Steely Dan… among others. I believe you can hear some flourishes of those true loves on this album.”
Miami Moon is set to arrive on August 16 via Allman’s own Create Records; the album is available to pre-order and pre-save now. Up to and through the release, the artist will tour the US and Europe with his Devon Allman Project and The Allman Betts Family Revival.
