On Friday, March 14, Trey Anastasio continued his solo acoustic tour with another intimate evening at Columbus, Ohio’s Mershon Auditorium. Now seven shows into his exhaustive cross-country series, the Phish frontman’s latest stand solidified what fans can expect at the 14 shows still to come while still surprising his audience; while a core of Anastasio’s current preferred tracks is coming into focus, the artist kept the program fresh with four tour debuts, two of which were first-time acoustic treatments.
Stepping into the spotlight with only his acoustic guitar, Anastasio greeted his fans and set off his performance with the 2016 Big Boat centerpiece “More.” From this immersive opener, he proceeded through a laundry list of longtime fan favorites that has taken exciting new shapes on his outing so far, including “Heavy Things,” “Brian and Robert,” “Blaze On,” “Possum,” “Twist,” “Mountains in the Mist” and “Wedge.” While all these entries have already been presented on the current run, they took on new energy as Anastasio centered Phish standards over his solo originals more heavily than usual.
Trey turned a corner with a stirring solo iteration of “A Life Beyond the Dream,” which marked the Ghosts of the Forest and Sigma Oasis standout’s tour debut. Shortly after, he welcomed accompaniment from pianist and longtime collaborator Jeff Tanski, who continued his recurring role as a second-act sit-in on “Stash” and “Divided Sky” before bolstering Anastasio’s first acoustic performance of the Rift classic “Horn.”
Anastasio and Tanski continued as a duo through to the set-closing “Harry Hood,” then Anastasio set off an encore alone with “6 ½ Minutes” and the tour debut of “My Problem Right There.” Tanski joined onstage again for the first acoustic performance of “Lonely Trip,” then the duo bid the crowd a fond farewell with “First Tube.”
Anastasio will return to the stage tomorrow, March 18, for a sold-out show at Chicago’s Orchestra Hall. For tickets and more information on the solo acoustic tour, visit trey.com/tour.
