On Wednesday night, Oct. 26, Marcus Mumford brought his current North American tour to W.L. Lyons Brown Theatre in Louisville, Ky. There, the musician ran through the tracking list off his debut solo album (self-titled), which dropped on Sept. 16 via Island Records– but not before a solo take on “Awake My Soul” and “The Cave” from the artist’s Mumford & Sons’ catalog. To follow the delivery of newly released music, Mumford concluded his show by working through a selection of covers, including two tunes that beckoned back to his New Basement Tapes days. During that time, his bandmate from the aforementioned project, Jim James, assisted.

As previously mentioned, the midweek concert got underway with a pair of Mumford & Sons tunes ahead of a complete run-through of the artist’s latest solo project, beginning with the opening track “Cannibal” and closing on the final number of the 10-track album, on “How.” After a striking display of new material, Mumford harkened back to 2012’s Babel LP, on an unplugged acoustic rendition of fan favorite “I Will Wait.” Next, the artist and his backing band covered Taylor Swift’s “cowboy like me,” a tune he guested on when the songstress tracked it for her 2020 album, Evermore. During the number, Mumford received some instrumental assistance from The A’s.

A high point of the night arrived when hometown hero and frontman of My Morning Jacket stepped out to assist during a run-through of The New Basement Tapes’ songs, which began with “Down on the Bottom,” which doubled as a tour debut. Next, they delivered a collaborative “When I Get My Hands on You” before the final song of the night, a take on “Kansas City” from the supergroup’s 2014 LP, Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, which featured the use of (at the time) recently uncovered 1967 lyrics penned by Bob Dylan.
