The Final Ingredient in Dogfish Head’s Grateful Dead Tribute Ale Is…

May 15, 2013

Last year Dogfish Head Craft Brewery announced that it would create an Imperial Pale Ale that celebrated the music of the Grateful Dead to be called American Beauty. The brewery put the call out to fans as to what ingredient would be added beyond “all-American hops and barley.” Dogfish posted yesterday that “Teams from Dogfish and the Dead read all the stories and thought about how well the ingredients would work in a pale ale. Everything had to be kosher with federal regulators, too. (Sorry, all you folks who suggested ‘magic’ mushrooms.)” Ultimately, they took the advice of a homebrewer named Thomas Butler who suggested granola, noting, “The components of granola – honey, toasted grains, oats and fruit – offer a lot from a beer perspective. The idea is to have a sessionable ale that highlights the oats and honey with a nice ‘dank’ hop selection.” Butler will be on hand along with Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux when Dogfish brews a test batch, with the production batch set to hit stores in October.
