Tedeschi Trucks Band continued their multi-night stand at New York’s Beacon Theatre over the weekend with a continuation of first set visits to their recent I Am the Moon repertoire, as the ensemble worked through the entirety of Farewell on Friday and Ascension on Saturday night. Sprinkled in were various covers ranging from Bob Dylan to The Allman Brothers Band as well as a mix of takes on tunes written by blues artists like Blind Joe Reynolds, Bessie Smith and more.
After their Thursday night gig, the group followed up with a complete run-through of I Am the Moon: IV. Farewell, beginning with the album’s first track, “Last Night in the Rain,” before following with “Soul Sweet Song” and “D’Gary.” As they moved through the track list, the group landed on “Where Are My Friends?” Then, they continued with “I Can Feel You Smiling” prior to Farewell’s official end on “Another Day.”
Then, the first set brought a take on Blind Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues” before the band visited their Revelator collection on “Until You Remember.” Next, Tedeschi Trucks Band chose “Idle Wind” from 2013’s Made Up Mind for the final tune of Friday’s initial set. Their second set began with The Allman Brothers Band’s “Stand Back,” which came prior to “I Want More,” a number that kicked off a selection of choice covers paired with a few originals. For their encore, the band landed on “Get What You Deserve” from The Derek Trucks Band’s Already Free album.
After concluding Friday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band followed up with another sold-out show at the Beacon on Saturday evening with I Am the Moon: II. Ascension to kick off the band’s first set. After running through the entirety of the track list, they brought out a cover of “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever” prior to a set ending “Whiskey Legs.” Next, they started their second frame with Dylan’s “Down in the Flood” before returning to originals on Signs’ “Hard Case.”
“Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?” came next, then the ensemble landed on the title track off The Wood Brothers’ 2011 LP Smoke Ring Halo. The covers continued with a take on Johnny Moore’s Three Blazers’ “How Blue Can You Get,” followed by “Anyhow” and The Box Tops’ “The Letter.” More Allman Brothers Band covers came on the band’s third night at the Beacon with a take on “Little Martha.” Then, they threw in fan favorite “Midnight in Harlem.” Finally, a take on Charles Segar’s “Key to the Highway” arrived before Tedeschi Trucks Band ended the set on “Bound for Glory” off their LP Revelator. As their encore, they played “Tell the Truth” to cap Saturday night’s concert.
After last night’s action, the band will take a well-deserved Sunday night break from the Beacon stage before resuming their residency on Monday, Oct. 3.
