Noel Gallagher Bashes Thom Yorke in New Interview

November 5, 2015

In a new interview with Esquire, Noel Gallagher continues his flawless track record of impeccably honest, crass and comical interviews by delivering a gem filled with the usual put-downs of bands like Radiohead, The Stone Roses and One Direction. But mostly Radiohead.

“I’m aware that Radiohead have never had a fucking bad review,” Gallagher says. “I reckon if Thom Yorke fucking shit into a light bulb and started blowing it like an empty beer bottle it’d probably get 9 out of 10 in fucking Mojo.”

Recalling a recent Coachella experience in which Gallagher and his wife gave Radiohead “one more chance,” he says, “they were playing this post-techno: ‘de-de de de.’ We were a bit pissed. And then he started singing. No. Not for us. We’re party people.”

“Look, as soon as Thom Yorke writes a song as good as fucking ‘Mony Mony,’ give us a fucking shout.”

Gallagher seemed to have insults at the ready, or at least a list of bands that he thought necessary to bash in the interview. When asked about Oasis’ place in the greatest British rock bands, he says, “We weren’t as great as the greats but we were the best of the rest. We did more than The Stone Roses could fucking even fathom.”

As always, Gallagher had some opinions on the current state of the music industry, although his thoughts reflected a slightly more positive side rather than degrading (at least at first). He speaks on the live show’s place in the Internet-dominated landscape: “The gig will never die because you can’t download it,” Gallagher concludes. “You can’t download spirit. And, so, for the likes of me who persevered from an early age to play the fucking guitar and write songs and practice and practice and practice, I’ll be fine. God help fucking Zayn Malik.”

Part of the interview went slightly meta, as Gallagher spoke on why people love to interview him, and why he loves it as well, saying that it gives him the opportunity to be himself: “Because I get to be a gobshite, and I get to do that thing: to be the last of a dying breed.” He’s also acutely aware of what he needs to do to make a good interview. Discussing how he feels when someone asks about a new album, he scoffs: “People are not interested in how I went from G-minor to fucking F-sharp major. I have an opinion on everything and if I don’t have an opinion, I’ll fucking make one up on the spot.”
