Yesterday, Sunday, Dec. 18, noted Nashville photographer, Michael Weintrob, appeared on CBS Sunday Morning to discuss 2017’s Instrumenthead and its follow-up, fittingly titled Instrumenthead Revealed, with the producer of the weekend broadcast, Roman Feeser.

During the segment, CBS visited Weintrob’s East Nashville, Tenn., studio, where they caught up with the photographer, who was capturing John Oates of the pop duo Hall & Oates alongside his fabled Fender Stratocaster, which the artist picked up in 1967 for a mere $125 on New York’s Upper West Side. Notable, the instrument has appeared on every Hall & Oates record.

Following the opening segment, Weintrob provided background information on the origins of the project, noting that he began as the house photographer at the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins, Colo., where he had the chance to capture a backstage portrait of the Derek Trucks Band.

The photographer revealed that bassist Todd Smalley was running late and once he arrived, Weintrob invited the musician to “ do something crazy, put your bass down your shirt.” In turn, the bassist stuck his instrument down his shirt and pants, covering his face. While the Weintrob didn’t realize the significance of the image at the time, it unleashed a path that he has continued to meander down through his artistic practice.

The interview continues by working through segments of Weintrob’s life, painting a picture of his experience as a concert photographer and the birth of his artistic passion. Also included, is a segment featuring The Meters, George Porter Jr., who was one of the first individuals to be photographed with his instrument covering his face.
