Last night, Marcus Mumford brought his current tour to the Beacon Theatre in New York. The musician is currently on the road in support of his debut solo release (self-titled), which dropped on Sept. 16 via Island Records. The Monday night performance consisted of a handful of numbers plucked from the artist’s Mumford & Sons repertoire mixed with the entirety of his latest studio collection. During the night, Mumford welcomed guests, including Oscar Isaac, Monica Martin, Ben Lovett, Taylor Goldsmith, and openers, The A’s.
Mumford began his gig at The Beacon with a solo take on “Awake My Soul” and “The Cave,” both of which appeared on Mumford & Sons’ 2009 debut album, Sign No More. Next, the artist brought out the evening’s initial guest, actor Oscar Isaac, who assisted with a pair of traditional tunes: “Dink’s Song (Fare Thee Well)” and “Hang Me, Oh Hang Me.”
After the collaboration, Isaac left the stage, leaving Mumford and his band to take on the (self-titled) tracking list, beginning with the opening number, “Cannibal,” which flowed into “Grace,” “Prior Warning,” “Better Off High,” “Only Child,” “Dangerous Game” and “Better Angels.” As “Go in Light” arrived, so did Monica Martin, the songstress who appeared on the studio recording of the tune added her chops to last night’s rendition. After completing the number, Martin left the stage, leaving the billed band to deliver the final material off (self-titled) with “Stonecatcher” and “How.”
The single-set performance carried on with a cover of Taylor Swift’s “cowboy like me,” a song included on the songstress’ ninth studio album, evermore. Then, the billed musician’s Mumford & Sons bandmate arrived. Ben Lovett assisted with three acoustic numbers, beginning with fan favorite “I Will Wait,” followed by “Ditmas,” and lastly, a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.” For the final tunes of the night, Mumford welcomed all the night’s guests to the stage, including new comer, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith, to assist on The New Basement Tapes’ “When I Get My Hands on You” and “Kansas City.”
After last night’s memorable performance, Mumford will travel north to the Wang Theatre in Boston, for a Tuesday night gig. Tickets for tonight’s concert remain on sale and can be purchased here.
