MALIA has released her new EP, If I’m Being Honest. Across the six-track cycle, the alt-R&B singer-songwriter runs at the distant reaches of her feelings through vivid evocations of her inner life, rich with insight and propelled by an insatiable/unshakable tendency towards growth.

If I’m Being Honest feels like me allowing myself to take up more space,’ MALIA told Relix. “It’s the most open and self-aware I’ve ever been in my music about my fears, intimacy, my standards, my desires, and the way I move through the world. There’s a lot of vulnerability in these records and a lot of growth.”

Through a decade of diaristic offerings, self-revelation has become a cornerstone of MALIA’s music, and she’s more in touch with her intuition on her latest release than ever before. Each song on If I’m Being Honest makes sense of the flitting half-thoughts and gut feelings that swirl around romantic attachment and finds solid common ground in individual experiences. Taken together, they’re a record of her musical and personal cultivation.

MALIA’s raw songwriting takes flight in refined, forthcoming melodies crafted with producer Nick Green. After reconnecting with the Grammy-winner by chance, they settled in at Los Angeles’ Furaha Sound to cut their first collaboration since MALIA’s 2017 debut album, Late Bloomer, alongside guitarist TJ Whitelaw and recording engineer Jonathan Rahi. To fit MALIA’s grappling with double-edged passions, they recorded with the same emphasis on intimacy, letting her effortlessly captivating vocals lead sleek, immediate and understated arrangements.
