Listen: Shira Elias Releases Self-Defining Single “Jus Wanna Be”

Shira Elias has released her latest independent single, the self-defining anthem “Jus Wanna Be.” This is the artist’s first release since 2022’s sophomore EP, Services, the follow-up to her 2020 six-song set, Goods. The latest chapter in the musician’s effervescent come-up is informed by an extensive tenure with Turkuaz, current touring outfit Cool Cool Cool, and experiences on the road paying homage to Talking Heads with Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew.
“Jus Wanna Be” is Elias’ love note to self, an expression of acceptance after tussling with identity. Following a lapse in solo releases, the song serves as a catch-up with the artist, who dotes, “I just wanna be/ I just should be me/ Cause I’m everything,” a stream of self-assurance that functions like a mantra. It is a soulful and passionate display that kicks up sonic references to artists like Prince and his own funk, rock, R&B, and pop reference points.
“I’m super excited for people to hear me again in this way. I’ve really wrestled over the last 2 years with what being an independent artist means and looks like in these times. Ultimately, this song is my declaration of where I’ve landed with it all. Oh, and it’s a hell of a bop,” Elias imparts via press release.
Like today’s release and all forthcoming deliverables, Elias worked alongside her musical and life partner, MEGA, while teaming up with fellow artist and writer MacKenzie. Recently, the trio has formed the production house Kool Zoombies. “Jus Wanna Be” serves as the first official release from the production house. The track was recorded at Los Angeles’ Morty’s Place.
