Listen: Arctic Monkeys Reflect on Heartbreak with New Single “There’d Better Be A Mirrorball”

Arctic Monkeys have released a video for their latest song, “There’d Better Be a Mirrorball.” The song is the lead single and opening track from their recently announced LP The Car. The video for the song marks the first they’ve released in four years and was directed by Arctic Monkeys Alex Turner.
In the slow-burning, jazz-tinted, lo-fi track, Turner croons as if each word could be his last. He sings, “So if you wanna walk me to the car/You oughta know I’ll have a heavy heart,” Turner pleads on the song’s chorus. “So can we please be absolutely sure/That there’s a mirrorball?”
The Car will serve as the follow-up to 2018’s Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, which was written by Turner and produced by longtime collaborator James Ford. It’s also notable that in 2020 they shared a live album of their concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall from 2018, all proceeds from which went to War Child UK, a charity that supports children recovering from the psychological and physical toll of surviving war.
A short statement that was released when The Car was announced said the band are “running wild in a new and sumptuous musical landscape,” with “some of the richest and most rewarding vocal performances of Alex Turner’s career.” The Car releases on Oct. 21.
