Dead & Company trucked up to Michigan on Wednesday night for a show at Clarkston’s Pine Knob Music Theatre. The concert saw Jay Lane sitting in on drums for a portion of the set, the band’s live debut of “Supplication” and a performance of John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” in honor of Natascha Weir’s birthday.
The band kicked the night off with fan-favorite “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” with Lane on drums in Bill Kreutzman’s stead. The band then moved into a funky “Feel Like a Stranger” before following up with “Cold Rain and Snow,” during which John Mayer showed his renowned blues chops, masterfully laying down lines and leading the band.
Next up Weir handled vocals on “Minglewood Blues,” and bassist Oteil Burbridge showed off his crooning on “China Doll.” Dead & Company then shifted towards the western genre by playing “Jack Straw” and Johnny Cash’s “Big River.” To close out the first set, the group brought a jammed-out “Bird Song” to the stage.
Set two began with “Here Comes Sunshine” and “Playing in the Band.” Dead & Company then cruised into “Uncle John’s Band” and followed up with the live debut of Weir’s side project Kingfish’s “Supplication.” Dead and Company reprised back to “Uncle John’s Band,” and melted into “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” before Kreutzmann joined the stage for “Drums” and “Space” and performed for the remainder of the night.
After the band took on “Space”–possibly the most psychedelic portion of the night– they fell into John Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme” in honor of Natascha Weir’s birthday. The Continued jam of“A Love Supreme” segued into “Wharf Rat,” which morphed into a high-energy “U.S Blues” to close out the second set. The band returned to the stage for an encore of “Ripple” before packing up for the night.
Dead & Company’s tour continues on July 1, where they will perform at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, N.Y. Find tickets for Dead & Company’s upcoming shows here.
