Dave Matthews Band Perform at The Hollywood Bowl with David Campbell Led Orchestra and Robert Glasper

Dave Matthews Band performed two stunning shows at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Monday, Sept. 19 and Tuesday, Sept. 20. Over the course of the evenings, Dave Matthews and his band explored fan favorites, covers, and welcomed the assistance of a David Campbell led orchestra along with Robert Glasper on Tuesday.

Dave Matthews Band opened up their set Monday with “#41” before moving into “You Never Know.” Next came the first cover of the weekend, Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain,” which marks the 11th time the band has covered it since its debut on July 2, 2022. Next came, fan favorite “Satellite,” followed by several other iconic Dave Matthews Band tunes, including “Don’t Drink the Water,” “The Riff,” “You & Me,” and “Lover Lay Down.” For the middle of the set, Matthews welcomed conductor David Campbell and an impressive string section to more fully utilize the famous amphitheater. Campbell and the ensemble – comprised of Adrienne Woods (cello), Ann Marie Simpson (violin), Joel Derouin (violin), Joel Pargman (violin), Kathleen Robertson (violin), Mark Cargill (violin), Michele Richards (violin), Oliver Kraus (cello), Peggy Baldwin (cello), Rodney Wirtz (viola), Tom Lea (viola) – joined Dave Matthews Band on “Squirm.” From there, they moved into the ever courageous “When the World Ends,” then the longing “Steady as We Go.” For the final song of the evening featuring the orchestra, the ensemble played “What You Are.”

The core members of Dave Matthews Band – Matthews, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, Tim Reynolds, Rashawn Ross, Jeff Coffin and Buddy Strong – remained for “Stay or Leave” before Matthews, Reynolds, and Bauford played a stripped-down take on “Kill the Preacher.” Next, Lessard, Coffin, and Strong returned for “Why I Am.” They then welcomed trombonists Alex Wasily and Elizabeth Lea on stage to add some brass to “Jimi Thing.” For the final song of the set, Marie Simpson added her pristine violin on “Ants Marching.” For the encore, Matthews performed a solo take on Tex Ritter’s “Rye Whiskey” before the core members joined for the last song of the evening, “Grey Street.”

To Kick off last night’s set, Dave Matthews Band performed “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin), followed by “Rooftop” and a cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker.” They then moved towards the blues with “Louisiana Bayou,” which was trailed by a pairing of fan favorites: “Fool to Think” and “Crush.” The group continued with a more recent release, 2021’s “The Ocean And The Butterfly,” which was followed by “What Would You Say.” Luminary Robert Glasper, the first special guest of the evening, then took to the stage to assist the band on “Seek Up.” After much applause, Matthews, Beauford, Lessard, Reynolds, Ross, Coffin and Strong played a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.” The septet moved through “Dancing Nancies” and “Warehouse” before once again welcoming Campbell and company on stage.

The band and orchestra began with “Something to Tell My Baby” and then teased “What You Are.” Next came “Drive In Drive Out,” followed by “If Only” and “Madman’s Eyes.” After the euphonious arrangements, Dave Matthews Band continued with a cover of a single by their frontman, “So Damn Lucky.” They closed the set with “Tripping Billies,” during which Marie Simpson joined. After a short break, Dave Matthews Band returned to perform “Sister” sans bass  (Lessard), keyboards (Strong), and saxophone (Coffin). For the final song of the run, the core members of Dave Matthews Band performed “Two Step,” which included a “Time Bomb” intro.

Dave Matthews will perform next with Tim Reynolds at the Coastal CU Music Park at Walnut Creek, Calif., on Sept. 24. Find tickets here.
