While many Deadheads gathered at Sept. 8’s Sound Summit in Mill Valley, Calif. to see Bobby & The Chew Toys (a new trio featuring Bob Weir and former RatDog bandmates, bassist Robin Sylvester and drummer Jay Lane), perhaps the biggest surprise of the event came during jazz-fusion pioneer Herbie Hancock’s set. In one of the most unlikely pairings in recent memory, Weir and Hancock joined forces for a single-song sit-in.

“I’m gonna bring up a guest. A friend. A friendly face. A friendly sound,” Hancock told the crowd, before welcoming Weir onstage. The Grateful Dead guitarist quickly plugged in his Stratocaster and jammed on Hancock’s 1973 Head Hunters tune “Chameleon.” Afterwards, the two musicians stood arm-in-arm as the crowd applauded.
