Watch an Emotional Trey Anastasio Pay Tribute to the Late Butch Trucks at Wanee

April 23, 2017

As this is the first Wanee Festival since the shocking passing of Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks, musicians are honoring the late drummer during their sets in Florida this weekend including Trey Anastasio, who delivered a stirring and emotional tribute to Trucks.

Recounting his sit-in with the Allmans in 2014, Anastasio said that coming on stage he noticed that “literally everybody on that stage was a group of musical assassins,” calling Oteil Burbridge one of his favorite musicians. “I walked on stage and we kicked into the first tune and I heard this sound behind me,” he recalls of Trucks’ drums. “And I thought, ‘Wow, that’s the sound of the Allman Brothers.'”

“When you stand up here and you feel it, and I felt it, there was a guy driving that truck–it felt like an eighteen-wheeler going down the street,” he remarked. Anastasio also mentioned Trucks also took the members of Phish out fishing on his boat. “He told us all kinds of crazy rock and roll stories. My heart is full of love and my heart is full of memories right now.”

Following Trucks’ passing in January, Anastasio penned a note on Phish’s website about the drummer. “For me, Butch’s voice was as integral a part of the Allman Brother’s sound as Gregg’s, Duane’s or any of the other great musicians that played over the years,” he wrote. “No one sounded like him.”
