“You and You Alone” is the Hidden Gem on the New Umphrey’s McGee Album

November 2, 2017

There were a number of things to notice about the tracklist to Umphrey’s McGee’s new album its not us, all lowercase being very important. There was of course the songs that you’ve never heard of, about half the record falls into that category. Then there were a number of tunes that have been circling around the band for a few years: “Remind Me,” “Forks,” “Speak Up” and “Piranhas.”

But one title may have slipped by some people, the anchor of the album right in the middle, the delicate “You and You Alone” which follows the predictable heaviness of “Remind Me.” In the blinding excitment of realizing one of the best Raw Stewage songs produced by the band over the years, “Remind Me,” it was easy to move further down the tracklist and overlook what came next. But in doing that, you missed the hidden gem of the new Umphrey’s McGee album.

Out of every song written by a member of Umphrey’s McGee, “You and You Alone” would be grouped among the longest shots to make a new album from the band. Not only has it never touched the UM stage even one time, it’s a rarity by all other standards. The song has existed solely in the Brendan Bayliss solo catalog, with just one appearance at the Bayliss and Jake Cinninger Holiday show. But even for the occasional Bayliss solo shows, it isn’t all that common either, making it one of the most intriguing selections on its not us

Watch Bayliss play the song in 2013 at the Cubby Bear in Chicago.
