Watch Old Crow Medicine Show Cover Phish’s “Bouncing Around the Room” in Vermont

July 23, 2018

On Sunday night, Old Crow Medicine Show headlined the latest installment of the Ben & Jerry’s Concerts on the Green series in Shelburne, VT, and the bluegrass veterans decided to give a shoutout to some Vermont heroes by offering their take on Phish’s “Bouncing Around the Room.”

The cover—complete with OCMS’ signature harmonies—stayed true to the feel of Phish’s playful original, and was even preceded by a short tease of Trey Anastasio’s riff from “First Tube.” Below, watch fan-shot video of the tribute.

Last night wasn’t the first time that Old Crow have covered Phish in Vermont, as the band tried out “Poor Heart” and “Lawn Boy” at a venue outside Burlington back in the summer of 2014. Later that year, OCMS’ Ketch Secor spoke with Relix about the band’s Phish fandom:

“Cory had been on the road with Phish for like 200 shows, and when I was a kid, I didn’t go to nearly that many but I went to a few Phish shows and I saw the Dead twice,” Secor says with a hint of pride. “Gill went to Dead shows—he had a couple of years on us, and he spent his teenage years in Seattle. I was 16, had dreadlocks and lived in Virginia—I went to see Phish because they were present. They played Richmond and they played D.C. We knew all the words to all these Phish songs—it was really fun to learn them again and pick ones that would work for our band. It’s part of paying homage to the places that you are.”
