Watch Metallica Reflect on Late Bassist Cliff Burton and ‘Master of Puppets’ Era

September 1, 2016

On September 13, Metallica will revisit their Master of Puppets era with the new book Back to the Front, comprised of old photos and memories from one of the metal kings’ finest records.

Ahead of the release of the book, the band has put together a series of videos of the band members discussing some of the most notable moments from that time including their late bassist Cliff Burton, who passed away while on tour supporting the record in 1986. The emotional retelling of Burton’s time in the band by James Hetfield, Kirk Hammett, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich is full of memories and reflection from those who were there and those who followed.

“I still miss Cliff, no doubt,” Hetfield says. “Seeing photos that I haven’t seen before, especially where we’re together, that is awesome.” An emotional Hammett says he still misses Burton, adding that, “I respect Cliff’s memory and I respect everything he stood up for and it’s what I try to stand up for.”

Trujillo, who ultimately replaced Burton’s replacement Jason Newsted in the band, tells a few stories about entering the Metallica world, calling Burton “such a unique player and huge influence in my career.” Trujillo and the rest of the band also praise Ray Burton, the father of their late bassist. Hetfield jokes, “When I grow up, I want to be Ray Burton.”
