Watch Jason Isbell Cover “Midnight Rider” in a Mobile, AL Bar
As the saying goes: You never know who you’ll run up on in Mobile, AL.
That’s not a saying, but it holds true in this case if it was as Jason Isbell and two members of his band, Sadler Vaden and drummer Chad Gamble (who recently saw Jurassic Park for the first time), popped up at Veets Bar 66 to sit in with Joe Anderson of the Veets house band. Isbell and Vaden led the quartet on a cover of “Midnight Rider” which has made its way to YouTube thankfully.
Isbell spoke to Relix following the release of his excellent solo record Something More Than Free, and that conversation pivoted briefly to the legacy the Allmans left in a place like Muscle Shoals, where Isbell himself came about. ““The Allmans were trying to find something,” he said. “They were on a bit of a musical journey, and that was really something that Southern rock didn’t necessarily embrace. That was more of an improvisational, sort of Grateful Dead influence.” How did they find that improvisational spirit? “Mushrooms. Magical mushrooms that grew out of cow shit in Macon, GA.”
