Watch: Beck Wins Album of the Year, Kanye West Almost Crashes Speech

Beck had a really great/awful night at The Grammys. To start on a positive note, the singer-songwriter capped one of his most successful years as an artist by collecting two awards for his stellar Morning Phase. On top of being named the best album of the year by yours truly, Beck also notched awards for Best Rock Album and the highly coveted Album of the Year presented by Prince himself. The latter set off a bit of a shitstorm on various fronts. First, Twitter had no idea who the hell Beck was, as #WhoIsBeck actually became a global trending hashtag. And then Kanye happened.

The ignorance of the internet aside, Kanye West decided this was an appropriate time to reprise his now infamous crashing of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV VMA’s in 2009. West jumped on stage for a brief second before deciding against the idea, drawing laughter from much of the audience. A moment of self-awareness from Kanye, as he made light of a nearly career-ending move made six years ago. Now, when West blitzed Taylor Swift (by the way, the two seemed to have made up last night), she was an innocent 19-year old with very little experience in the spotlight. This was different. This was Beck. What made this moment refreshing and hilarious was part-Kanye’s self-awareness as well as Beck’s complete control of the situation. As West walked away, a collected Beck followed him back, urging him to come back to the stage. “Come back. Where are you going,” he said. “I need some help up here.”

Replay the awkward yet funny incident below.

Let’s examine this a little closer. Have you ever watched your friend do something stupid with the full realization that there is nothing you can do to prevent it? Look into Jay Z’s eyes. That is a man who knows this situation is far beyond his expansive realm of control. That is a look of sheer terror followed by an overwhelming sense of relief.

On the aftershow, Kanye addressed the stunt, saying that “Beck needs to respect artistry and should’ve given the award to Beyonce.” Yikes, ‘Ye. Maybe it wasn’t as playful as it seemed.

Update: In a new interview with US Weekly, Beck responded humbly, saying:

“I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody,” Beck said when asked how he felt about West crashing the stage. “How many great records has he put out in the last five years right?”

Even though he said Beyonce should have won? “Absolutely,” replied the humble musician. “I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyonce!”

And what about his diss that Beyonce is true artistry, and you’re not? “You can’t please everybody, man,” he replied. “I still love him and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”
