Throwback Thursday: Umphrey’s McGee and Jen Hartswick Honor Etta James in New York City

January 21, 2016

I know, I know, I know. Why oh why are you reminding us of more dead musicians and artists? I apologize in advance, but this one is too good not to relive. On this day in 2012, Umphrey’s McGee wrapped up their birthday party with a very special tribute to the late Etta James, who passed away shortly before the band’s run at the Best Buy Theater (now PlayStation) in New York City.

Joining them on vocals was the incomparable Jen Hartswick, who they routinely call on to shoulder the vocal duty of the likes of Plant, Heart and more. Hartswick and the band perform admirably, delivering one of James’ most iconic tunes, “At Last” to kick off the encore of the final night. It’s also worth noting that on that particular night, UM debuted their cover of Daft Punk’s “Voyager” and also the second and final take on TV On the Radio’s “Second Song.’

Replay the tribute below.
