Stay Out Super Late Tonight and Listen to The National’s _Boxer_
In “Things That’ll Make You Feel Old” today, The National’s excellent LP Boxer turns ten years old and still remains one of the definitive indie rock records of the 2000s.
The National found some respectable traction with some of their previous albums including 2005’s Alligator, which some still prefer over Boxer, but the identity the group established for themselves on Boxer carried over into their following outputs High Violet and 2013’s Trouble Will Find Me. This is the definitive National album and continues to be the model for which all of their future records were crafted.
Whether its driving, danceable rock tunes like “Mistaken for Strangers” and “Apartment Story” or the incredibly heartbreaking moments like “Slow Show” and “Start a War,” The National’s songwriting depth is at its absolute best from the top to the bottom on this, a perfect album.
