Song Premiere: Zach Gill “Alchemy”

June 1, 2017

On June 2, Brushfire/Republic Records will release the new album from ALO’s Zach Gill. Life In The Multiverse is the follow-up to Gill’s 2008 debut full-length solo album, Zach Gill’s Stuff. On Life In The Multiverse, Gill is joined by the members of ALO on multiple cuts, as well as drummer Adam Topol, who like Gill, is a member of Jack Johnson’s band. Johnson, himself, adds guitar to a tune while Gill’s daughter Jaden also contributes vocals to a song.

Today we premiere “Alchemy” from the forthcoming record, which is now available for pre-order. The tune also features singer Nicki Bluhm and Stewart Cole (Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros) on French horn and trumpet. Gill tells Relix, “For my 40th birthday somebody gave me a dulcimer—not a hammered dulcimer but an Appalachian style dulcimer, it’s just got three strings. I tuned it up and started playing what became that song. A couple of years ago I was reading a lot of stuff about alchemy in general, I was interested in what it was. The common belief is that it’s turning lead into gold and there was that but as you get deeper into who alchemists were and what alchemy was about, it becomes more a philosophical school of spiritual lead and spiritual gold and how to transform things emotionally and through stories and mythology.”

Gill will kick off a summer tour with Jack Johnson tonight in Chicago, with the dates listed below the stream.
