Song Premiere: Stoop Kids “Curious Man”
We have a lively song premiere to set you off on your weekend. New Orleans’ soulful, hip-hop/rock/jazz collective Stoop Kids collaborated with Galactic’s Ben Ellman and Robert Mercurio, who produced “Curious Man,” the euphonious new track that we are sharing today.
The group tells Relix that the pairing came about after “Ellman approached us about recording/producing a song, and, after listening through a whole gambit of demos, Ben and Rob Mercurio both loved ‘Curious Man’ right away. Working with them was such a fun and humbling experience. We were able to record everything for the song in one 12-hour session in their personal studio in uptown New Orleans. Their ear for structure and instrumentation was spot on and the track turned out better than we could have imagined. It was a very exciting opportunity for us to use Stanton’s drum kit, snare and cymbals included, as well as Rob’s killer 1962 Fender p-bass.”
As for the story behind the song itself, they add, “‘Curious Man’ really embodies the double standard that we see in today’s society regarding male and female sexual curiosity. Katy Perry wrote ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and nobody questioned it. If Bruno Mars were to write the same song, I’m sure there would be a bigger reaction, and more importantly would raise questions about his sexuality. The thinking behind ‘Curious Man’ is the male counterpart to ‘I Kissed a Girl’; does it get the same laissez faire treatment or does it cause a stir?”
