Song Premiere: Pieta Brown feat. Calexico “In The Light”

February 14, 2017

Pieta Brown’s latest album, Postcards will be released on March 10. The name is altogether fitting because the songs arose when she sent musical postcards to a number of friends and colleagues. Brown dispatched these stripped-down, acoustic versions of songs to such fellow musicians as: Mark Knopfler, Calexico, Mason Jennings, David Lindley, Carrie Rodriguez, Caitlin Canty, and The Pines. Brown then asked them to “write back,” and collaborate with her on these recordings. The results appear on the new album, which is now available for pre-order.

Today we premiere “In The Light,” Brown’s collaboration with Calexico. She tells Relix, “’In The Light’ was written in Santa Monica, CA after a walk on the beach. I had been carrying around a postcard with a photo of the poet, Allen Ginsberg for weeks and something about the light that day on the beach got me thinking about the photo. The magic of the light, like the magic of the closeness we can feel to someone in spite of distances in time and space. I went back to the Travelodge were I was staying, and found a song. One extra cool moment was that right after I tracked the song in Iowa many months later, I left the studio to get some lunch and the postcard of Allen Ginsberg (that I had tucked in the visor of my car – and forgotten about – fell out into my lap as I was driving! When I started experimenting with the Postcards project I sent this song to Calexico instinctively. I knew Joey was from California and that John had spent some years there and I could almost hear Joey singing along! They recorded their first parts while on the road…from Manchester, England!”
