Song Premiere: Kings of Spade “Way She Goes”
Kings of Spade, a blues-rock outfit from Honolulu by way of Los Angeles, will release their new, self-titled studio album on October 19 via Soundly Music. The record was recorded with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb in his basement home studio in Nashville, and today we premiere the effort’s lead single, “Way She Goes.”
“When the band was searching for a producer, we looked up the guy who recorded one of our favorite bands, Rival Sons. It was Dave Cobb,” lead singer KC Nunes tells Relix. “Jesse sent him an email with some of our practice rehearsal recordings, and he responded.” Along with Nunes, Kings of Spade are drummer Matt Kato, guitarist Jesse Savio and bassist Tim Corker.
“‘Way She Goes’ is rooted in blues but still has that upbeat, dance-vibe rock that best describes our band’s genre,” Nunes says of the new single, a slinky number that features soaring chorus vocals and a pulsing, dance-floor-ready backbeat that segues into a reggae-infused bridge and back again. “Here, I’m singing about the struggle of attracting girls who have never been in queer relationships before. I’ve never had a lesbian girlfriend—it’s always a straight girl wondering why they’re attracted to me. This song is about that chase.”
