Revisit an Emotional “He’s Gone” Played Just Four Days After John Lennon’s Murder

December 8, 2016

Playing their first show after the horrific murder of John Lennon, the Grateful Dead paid homage as best they could, with a stirring, emotional version of “He’s Gone” played just four days after his death.

Performing at the Swing Auditorium in California on December 12, the group leaned into a powerful “He’s Gone” midway through the second set. Reports from the show suggest that Garcia was overcome with emotion during the tune as many were during that time, surely also in the audience.

Relive that moment below.
