Papi LeBatard Got Psychedelic While Discussing the NBA’s Weed Policy

October 26, 2017

If you happen to peruse ESPN’s daytime programming, you’ll encounter a lot of usesless drivel like Pardon the Interruption and the eighteenth running of NFL Live that feels particularly useless with no news breaking from the prior episode. But you’ll also find one of the funnier 30 minutes the network offers as Dan LeBatard and his father, Gonzalo “Papi” LeBatard team up with a third person (today it was the great Mina Kimes) for a discussion on a wide variety of sports topics.

Papi is the endearing elderly father who never fails to fall short in the humor department. He’ll typically read rap lyrics (he’s even rapped with Lil’ Wayne and Jim Jones), share his unfiltered thoughts and even poured champagne on himself after the Miami Heat won the NBA championship. He is, in totality, a treasure.

I’ll set it up for you and then let you enjoy the rest: The topic of the NBA’s policy on marijuana came up, with former Commissioner David Stern commenting that he believes the league should get rid of the ban and instead focus its efforts on studying its benefits to the athlete’s body. A smart, measured take from easily one of the best commissioners in any sport in some time that is also understandably attracting a variety of opinions.

Papi seems…..in favor.
