Listen to Conan O’Brien Talk About Getting The White Stripes Out of Hiatus to Play Final Late Night Show

October 13, 2017

Conan O’Brien closed out his NBC late night show in 2009 with a very special surprise performance from The White Stripes, as Jack and Meg reunited for a somber finale of “We’re Going to be Friends.”

The host recently spoke with Third Man Records about how it all came together, saying one of his final requests (O’Brien said you could “request the moon” for the final show) was to have The White Stripes be his final musical guest. Everything happened, with a twist.

As O’Brien explains, the performance took on a twist when White insisted that Meg played guitar for the song. He describes the scene at soundcheck as Jack is teaching Meg how to shape a G-chord to play the song.
