Hear Jake Cinninger Mistakenly Shoutout Charlotte in Columbia, SC
It’s a rockstar’s worst nightmare, in a lot of ways. The “WE LOVE YOU (insert city here)” moment gone horribly wrong. It happens sometimes and it happened to Umphrey’s McGee’s Jake Cinninger last week in Columbia, SC as the group kicked off their final weekend run of their winter tour.
During the first-set closing “Mulche’s Odyssey,” Cinninger slipped up during the final verse where he typically namechecks the city. He opted for Charlotte instead of Columbia, two cities that both start with “C” and are located in the Carolinas, but are separated by roughly 100 miles. It would all be well if that was the lone mistake, but it happened again in the second set as the guitarist mentioned Charlotte in “Mail Package.” At that point, it felt like an inside joke everyone was in on though. To be fair to Cinninger, Thursday night marked the band’s first show in the capitol of South Carolina since 2003. He succeeded with his reference of Duke’s Mayonnaise, which was created in Greenville, SC. 1/3 ain’t bad.
Listen below, with the mistake coming around the 2:24 mark of “Mulche’s Odyssey.” The “Mail Package” shoutout comes at the 3:20 mark.
Joel Cummins took to Twitter to explain the slip-up, saying that Cinninger actually did visit Charlotte that day, as he flew in to the North Carolina city earlier that day.
@byrnebabyybyrne this is what happens when you fly into Charlotte day of show.
