Has Anyone Else Noticed the Similarities Between “Blaze On” and “Go Cubs Go”?

I hear a lot of different songs when I listen to Phish’s “Blaze On.” The New Orleans classic “Iko Iko” comes to mind first and foremost, but I’d like to submit another entry that’ll be hard to avoid: the Chicago Cubs anthem “Go Cubs Go.”

I’ll let the evidence speak for itself, but while perusing some highlights from last year’s baseball season I found myself humming along to the very catchy song and suddenly the lines became blurred as the lyrics to “Blaze On” found their way over the chorus line. It worked perfectly.

Upon further inspection, the best way to hear “Go Cubs Go” emerge in “Blaze On” is to the tune at its most stripped down, Trey Anastasio’s solo version from his recently acoustic run. I present both into evidence.
