Galactic, Toots & the Maytals and Nigel Hall Band at Terminal 5 (A Gallery and Clips)

It was a great triple bill of Funk, Soul & Reggae Saturday night at Terminal 5.

The Nigel Hall band opened up. Nigel was joined by New Orleans veteran drummer Jermal Watson. Eric Coomes on bass & Adam Smirnoff on guitar, both of Lettuce rounded out the core band. And session drummer Butter Believelt joined the group on percussion and backing vocals. Hall is on tour as support on this leg of the Galactic tour.

The middle act of the night was the legendary Toots Hibbert with his band Toots & the Maytals. The 71 year old Hibbert played a non-stop 90 minute set that ran through just about every hit from a career now approaching 50 years. The pace at which the band ran was reminiscent of a classic James Brown Soul show. Only this was one of the last living true originals of Jamaican Ska & Reggae.

To close out the evening, Galactic took the stage for a high-energy set of funk-inspired music. David Shaw, lead singer of another New Orleans act, The Revivalists is on this part of the tour as a lead singer. The highlights were an interesting collection of covers including “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City” made famous by Bobby "Blue Bland, The Beatles “I Am The Walrus,” Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s rap hit “Got Your Money” and a final encore of the Led Zeppelin blues/rock classic, "When The Leveee Breaks.
