In transit

DAY TWO

Dallas to Sydney is the longest commercial flight, in miles, in the world. It’s 16 1/2 hours. That means when you leave on a Monday evening, you land in Australia on Wednesday. Ruby Tuesday has been stolen from you…forever. They say you “get it back” on the return trip. I ain’t buyin’ it.

Sunrise in Brisbane

So today’s 16 1/2 hour plane ride was prefaced by last week’s 30 hour train ride. I had a week off from touring and my son turned 13. I took him to Arizona for his gift. We snowboarded on an 11,500 mountain. We went ATVing in the red dirt desert of Sedona, hiking, shot guns, went to a Phoenix Suns basketball game & capped it all off with a trip up to the Grand Canyon.

This life of making music and being a parent is a balance. Being a father has shaped who I’ve become as a musician. It’s given me more depth, new layers of sensitivity, new levels of understanding, and a profound sense of reflecting back to my youth.

I remember 13 like it was yesterday. Rock n roll songs lived and moved in my veins , I started playing guitar, chicks magically now had boobs and all of a sudden they had become VERY cool.

When I was 13, I wanted to be on a plane to a place like Australia to play my guitar. Haha !! Now I’m on a plane to Australia and thinking my son is so lucky to be just now turning 13. Life is not a straight line from birth to death…it’s a figure 8.

Bondi Beach

DAY 2.5

Just landed in Sydney. I’m eating sushi at Bondi Beach and our Aussie tour manager is trying to swing tix to see Santana tonight. Life is good. Tomorrow starts the tour. No worries mate !
