Dave Matthews Performs, Talks Hugs and Numbered Song Titles on ‘Kimmel’

Dave Matthews Band took a break from the tail-end of their summer tour in support of recent album Come Tomorrow yesterday to stop by Jimmy Kimmel Live in Los Angeles and perform a couple songs, while Matthews himself sat down with the late-night host to discuss his affinity for hugs, why some DMB songs have numbered titles and how he feels about song requests at shows.
Matthews opened up by recounting the time he surprise-hugged fellow Kimmel guest Sarah Silverman in a hotel, adding the self-deprecating, “What a super creepy dude,” and joking that hugs should probably be toned down after one reaches the age of 50. The frontman also noted how good this summer’s DMB tour has felt, prompting Kimmel to ask him why they don’t just tour all the time (which the band basically used to do). Matthews simply responded, “That ship has sailed. I also like going home.”
Other topics of the conversation included Matthews’ apathy toward fan signs requesting songs at shows (“Oh look at all the requests! I don’t care!”) and that any request that is fulfilled was already on the setlist, plus why some DMB songs have titles like “#41.” (“Sometimes I look at the lyrics and I think, ‘Well, maybe it’s called that because I don’t know what the hell it’s about”).
Matthews and his band then laid down a couple of solid live performances of new album tracks on Kimmel‘s outdoor stage, running through “Again and Again,” which featured a funky breakdown led by guitarist Tim Reynolds and bassist Stefan Lessard, followed by the rocker “She,” which as always included a slinky keyboard solo from newest DMB member Buddy Strong.
