The Smart Studios Story, a film premiering today at South by Southwest, chronicles the story of the Madison, WI studio that producer Butch Vig founded with Garage bandmate Steve Marker. You might know a couple of the records made there, including Nirvana’s Nevermind, Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish, Death Cab for Cutie’s Plans and others.

Speaking to Billboard, Vig recalled those iconic sessions, saying, “I had no idea it was going to profoundly change my life. None of us had any idea. I think those sessions were fun because none of us had any expectations.”

He did add that there were some difficult moments, particularly in dealing with the unpredictable and moody frontman. “Kurt would have intense mood swings and just shut down. He would just go sit in a corner and disappear into his own space. Krist (Novoselic) would say, ‘He just goes into these moods and he’ll come out in awhile.’”

Below, watch a clip from the film about including a quote from Dave Grohl summing up early discussions with Kurt and Krist about a producer, saying, “Well let’s just do it with Butch, he’s the greatest.”
