Bill Walton Associates Grateful Dead Songs with his ESPN Colleagues
In a new piece with ESPN Front Row, Bill Walton talks even more Grateful Dead and even plays a fun game of associating his ESPN colleagues with Dead tunes. In the interview, Walton does share some interesting stories, including co-hosting a Grateful Dead New Year’s Eve broadcast, “almost 30 years ago,” according to the NBA Hall of Famer, along with Ken Kesey, Al Franken and Father Guido Sarducci. “I think that Larry Bird and Kevin McHale were there that night too, although it is quite possible that it was a different show,” he also noted. Bird and McHale tagging along with Walton to a Dead show? That’s must-see TV.
Walton also talked about one of his biggest failures in life–never taking Coach John Wooden to a Grateful Dead show. “Though not from lack of trying,” he said. “I always played my best ball when the Grateful Dead were around. And they were ALWAYS around.” True statement from a guy who has two NBA titles, two NCAA titles and a slew of MVP trophies.
Also discussing John Wooden, Walton tells a funny story about a time following a Dead show at UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion, where the band used their locker rooms as dressing rooms and lounges. “When Coach Wooden would come into the locker room the next day to conduct his regular inspection of appropriateness, he would wrinkle his nose, sniff the air, and ask, ‘What is that smell?’ If only Coach Wooden managed to get to a show, he’d have found out.
Walton then assigned a bunch of Grateful Dead songs to his ESPN mates, including Musberger, Bilas, Greenberg, Olbermann (who is now a former ESPN employee), the incredible Doris Burke, Mike Tirico, his broadcast parter Dave Pasch and the late, great Stuart Scott. Take a look below.
Brent Musburger: “Built to Last”; “Comes a Time”; “The Days Between”; “Saint of Circumstance”; “Estimated Prophet”; “Terrapin Station
Jay Bilas: “Pride of Cucamonga”; “Cosmic Charley”; “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodleloo”; “Cryptical Envelopment”; “Black Throated Wind”
Seth Greenberg: “Crazy Fingers”; “Cream Puff War”; “King Solomon’s Marbles”; “Bertha”; “My Brother Esau”; “Feel Like a Stranger”; “St. Stephen”; “The Eleven”
Keith Olbermann: “Help on the Way”; “Slipknot”; “Franklin’s Tower”; “Touch of Grey”
Doris Burke: “Cassidy”; “Bird Song”; “Althea”; “Fennario”; “Stella Blue”
Mike Tirico: “Eyes of the World”; “Let it Grow”; “Box of Rain”; “Ripple”
Dave Pasch: My computer has limited capacity – he needs the whole catalog, we’ll start with “Lost Sailor”
