Andrew Bird with the National Symphony Orchestra in D.C. (A Gallery)

October 28, 2018

On Friday night in Washington, D.C., multi-instrumentalist and classically trained indie-rock veteran Andrew Bird played his first-ever show with a backing symphony at the historic John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on the banks of the Potomac. After a National Symphony Orchestra-accompanied set by Gabriel Kahane (who Bird later credited with helping stoke the fires and make literal and musical arrangements for the two-night set with NSO), Andrew Bird took the stage in the decorous Concert Hall venue of the multi-room complex to perform a handful of original songs with the full symphony followed by a lengthy solo set and a number of tunes with Kahane on piano. Photographer Wesley Hodges shared some photos from the special night in DC.
