Memorable Bonnaroo Moments from Kings of Leon, Warren Haynes, Widespread Panic, Galactic, Umphrey’s,

May 27, 2011

In the June issue of Relix, we share a number of Bonnaroo performers’ favorite moments from the past. Be sure to pick up the issue for additional entries (and our special Bonnaroo section).NATHAN FOLLOWILL, KINGS OF LEON

Funniest: Sharing a popsicle with an unknown hot girl at the porta-potty and later marrying her.

Proudest: Headlining in front of our family and friends. A close second was winning the dance off at the silent disco against my imaginary friends. You know what I mean.

Favorite: Meeting my wife, obviously. And our first year playing, seeing American kids liking us for the first time. Chill bumps.

JOJO HERMANN, WIDESPREAD PANIC

Funniest: Bruce Springsteen playing “Santa Clause Is Comin’ to Town”

Proudest: The first Bonnaroo will always stick in my mind as being exciting. You knew you part of something that was gonna be really special. I’ll never forget Dottie Peoples and the choir performing “Tall Boy” during our set. And the time I felt a presence onstage behind me – I looked around to see Herbie Hancock about to jam on the clavinet.

Favorite: As a fan, the best time I had was hanging onstage and seeing Andrew Bird and Band of Horses, for the first time, back to back.

RYAN STASIK, UMPHREY’S MCGEE

Funniest: Funniest moment for me at Bonnaroo was hanging with the late great Greg Giraldo and discussing the art of being a stand-up comedian. He truly was a gifted artist and is missed dearly. R.I.P. GG.

Proudest: Losing my mind in a rage-athon/dance party to Darryl Hall & Chromeo with my best buddies.

Favorite: Headbanging to Metallica until I thought I would pass out!

WARREN HAYNES

Funniest: The Lewis Black incident. If you haven’t heard about it, I suggest you Google “Lewis Black Gov’t Mule Bonnaroo.” (see above)

Proudest: Gov’t Mule’s late nght show in 2007 where we got to share the stage with John-Paul Jones, Bob Weir, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady from Hot Tuna, Lewis Black, Michael Franti and Luther Dickinson. The highlight was playing four Zeppelin songs with JPJ.

Favorite: I really enjoyed watching The Police from the VIP platform onstage. We had a monitor with a great mix and I had never seen The Police, so it was cool watching them close up while also watching the crowd.
ROBERT MERCURIO, GALACTIC

Funniest: I thought that the whole Kanye West thing was pretty funny (and sad) to watch go down.

Proudest: I think it was ‘05 and we were headlining Which Stage. Our set was pushed back an hour or so due to really bad weather. The crowd stayed through the weather waiting, and once the clouds let up a bit, we started to perform. At the same moment Latrice (our vocalist) sang the lyrics “touch me and you will be struck by lightning” (from our song “Bittersweet” ) and a huge strike of lightning came from the skies. We all – including the audience – felt like someone from above was also checking out our set. What an amazing feeling!

Favorite: Watching The Police from about two feet in front of the main stage. They sounded great and it felt like I was getting a private performance.
GREG GILLIS (AKA GIRL TALK)

Funniest: Trying to do an interview in the pit during Tool.

Proudest: Getting my cords kicked out after people started dancing on my table in 2009. The silence was probably the most exciting musical moment for me.

Favorite: In 2009, some friends and I wandered deep into the camp grounds. We spent a few hours experiencing the real side of Bonnaroo. It got heavy.
